If, repeat, IF it was done right it could work and be a helluva hit. I never would have believed the Indiana Jones comeback movie would have worked but Spielberg & Ford pulled it off. Selleck & Bellasario could easily do the same thing. Magnum, Rick, TC, and even Higgins are all still alive & capable of shooting a feature film. Its a goldmine waiting to be dug up & cashed in from a financial perspective. In Selleck's words it would be interesting to see what MPI has been up to. CBS's reviving of Hawaii Five'O is proof enough. I am sure this idea has been discussed at numerous executive board meetings. MPI fan base (as this board proves daily) is probably the most loyal in existence. There was a petition somewhere on the internet to bring MPI back & again I'm sure it was viewed by the people in power.

If they're going to do it they better get on the stick & soon. Then again maybe they're waiting for the original cast to be too old to do it again. Who knows why it hasn't been done. Until then at least we all have Netflix & dvd's.

This comment will probably bring great support or great antagonism. Having just seen "The Lone Ranger":

If there were a way to do it with Armie Hammer as Magnum and Johnny Depp as -- are you ready? I think he would actually make a HYSTERICAL Higgins! But it would take some REALLY GOOD writing! If someone could get Johnny Depp on board, I bet it could be done, and it would be entertaining. Not a repeat of the original -- that simply doesn't exist except on celluloid and in our hearts, minds, and DVD players. But a new one? The only one I would go see. Well, actually, I'd go see anything that was done, whether I liked it or not, just to see HOW it worked (or not). But still, I vote for a Johnny Depp vehicle.

Just sent an email to Bruckheimer positing that idea...

I too agree that it's all in the writing but also directing, and about the Five O revival as proof of concept. But I don't think it should be a movie, just like Five O was not made into a movie. Indiana Jones revival is another good point, but also it always was a movie. They made an indiana series as young indiana but it failed after the first year. I think some things should be movies and some should be on tv, and IMO MPI as a movie it would be too easy for it to skew away from the spirit of the original show, even if from the start this wasn't the intent. It may attract some newer audiences but that's the problem, old school fans will not be that pleased. They rebooted Star Trek (original) for example in 2009. While it was pretty good initial effort, the 2nd film (Star Trek into darkness) failed IMO (and a lot of fans feel that too), and they probably didn't set out with the intent to alienate old school star trek fans either. I think a series of TV movies, or perhaps just one like the original, is the way to go, using the (new) Five O tie in as before with the original Five O tie in. Of course that's on CBS like the original MPI and I don't know what if any rights issue would come up with universal being under comcast/nbc now.

quite frankly, the 5-o is just borrowing the name(s). You;re not getting a Jack Lord performance, it's gone an entirely different direction and has lasted on the merits of what shows week to week.

The problem here is the character of Magnum is so intertwined with Selleck that it's just gonna have to take a charismatic actor to pull it off.....and get Selleck's blessing.

I say yes to a new MPI television series recasting all of the original cast and then some new as well. I've spent quite a bit of time going over the old characters, where they would be at today, and how to integrate the new characters.

I sat down the other day with my mother, who was also a MPI fan of her own back in the 80's, who would sit down on Thursday nights with me and watch the show. I ran through my ideas for the remake of the show with her and when I got done she remarked that she felt like she had just gotten done watching the show for real.
