Has anyone seen the PBS documentary "Alone In The Wilderness, The Dick Proenneke Story?
The guy had an amazing life and adventure in the great white north. He's become a bit of a hero of mine.

I have seen the documentary and read the book. The book was written originally sometime around 1975. I believe Mr. Proenneke passed away in 2003, in his '80's. A truly amazing story about a truly amazing man.

Is that a cell phone I see in his hands? Just kidding... I've seen that documentary a few times over the years. It is fascinating to see him building his house and going about doing what needs to be done around his new home. He certainly was a remarkable man. I really like the no frills style of the documentary too, very peaceful to watch. Documentaries aren't made like that anymore.

At first glance it looked like a cell phone to me too. I seriously doubt that a) he ever used a cell phone, and 2) there would be reception way out there. Upon further examination I've determined that it's a hand planer he's holding. I have one like that that belonged to my dad.

Yea, I watched it. What a great show. Now this was a real man. Not some manicure getting, spa visiting, hair coloring, metroseuxal from LA.

Can you imagine the isolation? I know the country is beautiful but this guy was not only miles away from anyone, he was hundreds of miles away from anyone.

I salute this man's man. He was a great engineer and builder.

If anyone is interested in this quick fix, there are lots of clips frome "Alone In The Wilderness" on youtube. He was truly inspirational. I could watch the video again and again.
I'm on the fence on how I feel about his cabin now being a tourist attraction.

One more thing about this. I hope you guys do not mind me getting sentimental on you, but I remember that my grandfather hung his tools up on nails inside and outside of his workshop and barn. Seeing tools hanging from nails on the house in the picture a few posts back reminded of it. Thanks for indulging me.

I think there are things about this series that not only remind us of simpler times, but despite his isolstion, make us envy him. He was a true man's man living life on his own terms. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Luther.
