I recall TC saying Rick's name that way, but do not recall the exact circumstances. However, if a person uses their nickname more often than they use their legal name, they will often be listed under both names. I've seen this in phone books and even in obituaries. TC may have said it that way because he wasn't sure which name Rick would be listed under.

That right there makes more sense than I want it to as Rick is very much embarrassed of his first name.
So I made a Topic Page about Magnum, P.I. Check it out here.

Can I just say this episode killed me.

I saw it during it's original run and was so madly in love with Larry Manetti that watching the end of the episode literally brought me to tears.

How was I ever going to get my man if he was behind bars?

:)

Seriously, this episode had a huge impact on me and I was truly devastated by it. I was not expecting him to go down! It ends up becoming so bittersweet when Magnum gets him off on a technicality as he's on his deathbed. I thought about how Rick would have felt if Magnum had really died.

I really need to watch this one again!

This episode bugs me...I mean honestly the "gang" as well as the viewer have always known that Rick puts his neck out with the organized crime connections, but for Rick to get thrown in the slammer in what I understand was to be the final season was really bringing things to a bad conclusion. Of course, not a permanent condition...

I myself have wondered in earlier seasons how Rick didn't get thrown in federal jail for weapons violations when he always seems to get ahold of fully auto weapons, but I never needed to see it in fantasy-time MPI...lol

Also, the shootout scene with Icepick is ridiculous. Everyone is taking cover behind desks and overturned couches...against Uzi fire? Yeah...ummm no...

Maybe they made couches differently in the 80s?

During his years with British Intelligence, Higgins apparently developed a strong sense of self-preservation, and still makes a point of having bullet-proof furniture!

I thought this was an excellent Rick-centric episode.

I can't believe people missed one very obvious flub, which happens not once but twice - On the still outside th King K club, which is shown twice, the old grey Audi is parked outside the club, when it's obviously been replaced by the newer sky-blue Audi several seasons before.

I zoomed in on the intersection and was able to see the name of Rick's complex: Gateway Peninsula:

TC then tells TM to "Take the stick." and TM has to reach down to get it and makes an ugly face. THAT was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in MPI.
I reacted the same way.... and I can appreciate how Magnum felt... being in control of the copter. Although, he should have been reasonably ok with it, since he took flying lessons from TC in an earlier show.

In subsequent episodes, and I'm thinking primarily of "Limbo", was anything every explained how Rick got out of jail for his guns???

One of the things that always bothers me is the obvious differences in times when alternate angles of particular scenes are shot... it becomes so obvious when the lighting and shadows are so different. It happened in this episode at about the 12 minute mark when from one angle, the sun is bright and giving deep shadows, but from the opposite angle, there are absolutely no shadows and no backlighting. To me, it's a continuous flub from season one through season eight. It's most annoying and disruptive to the flow.

Enjoyable story, complete with the usual and welcome relationship between the guys... I found myself annoyed at Carol (again)... she's always conning Magnum, but so unwilling to give him any help. I understand her situation, but Tanaka and Page looked the other way to let Magnum see "confidential" information; why couldn't Carol?????

I applaud Rick for his loyalty to Icepick, but question the writing that permitted him to be so hostile to Thomas immediately after his incarceration...

Did anyone else think Magnum looked like Tim Strawn (Kid Shellen's evil brother) from "Cat Ballou" when he had the thingie on his nose??

I think the first episode in the 8th season explained how he got back into circulation. Apparently, if I recall correctly, Carol did some manipulations and maneuvers with the feds to get him out. Honestly, I don't recall the actual reasons, but I'm pretty sure that if you can look at the episode I mentioned, you'll see this. When I saw Rick in season 8, I thought the writers had just gotten him out of jail without an explanation, but looked back and saw that there had been a reason given.

^^^ The reason given is found in the very next episode "Limbo." Magnum (offscreen) discovered that Rick's arrest warrant had been filled out using the name "Rick Wright" instead of "Orville Wright." Somehow this was enough to have all of the charges dismissed and Rick was immediately released.

It's like one of those old movie serials where at the end of one episode you see a buggy full of passengers tumble off of a cliff and then when you see the beginning of the next chapter they show another version of the scene where everyone jumped clear before the fall.
