Magnum Mania!

Hi Guys,
I am relatively new here and have been treading lightly till I get the feel of the place.
I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out that some episodes, even if they might contain a scene fans really like, are badly done. It's impossible to produce a seasons worth of episodes without a stinker or two, due to all sorts of factors. The afore mentioned Ted Danson said said repeatedly (its also a old Hollywood axiom)that if Cheers produced 5 classic episodes a year they were way ahead, that they strove for excellence but hey thats why they invented averages/grade curve.
Magnum PI is in the top rank of the best series of all time, but I'd wager Mister Selleck has his list of stinkeroo episodes. So lets not turn on members because they recognize that and use critical thinking, as "the unexamined life(or tv series) isn't worth living."
On the Yahoo Route 66 tv series board, they break down each episode, deconstructing everything to the nth degree, not to run it down but to see how it works, its like taking a college course run by posters who are academics and professional writers, even Hollywood pros such as the author of the Rambo book/movies and George Maharis have shared their thoughts. Plus regular slob posters like me chime in.
In any event, I think JJ has done a terrific job fashioning this more fan friendly place, the episode guide in particular is aces. In fact after scoping out many other sites I enjoy this one the most.

I think there's a difference between having a few crummy episodes in an 8 year run and "reveling in the awfulness" if you will. It's a TV show and as a creative medium some ideas will work, some won't. Some will resonate with many, some will not yet will be revered by a few. The nature of art I guess.

The interwebs however how given the ability for those wearing masks to cast stones willy nilly, trolling on without having to bear the responsibility of their words. Some people like to tear down just for the sake of tearing down, and use extremes they wouldn't if their opinions could be attached to them. It's like if IslandChick78 marched through Atlanta . . . at least a Southerner knows they are supposed to hate the memory of Sherman.

This board for the most part keeps clear of that kind of thing, which makes it a happy tidal pool of Magnumness.

I know it's off topic for this thread(is that a no no here, JJ?), but besides Selleck's two wives(and I believe JJ said his Dad was in a episode?) did he have any other family members appear on the series?
Was there any stunt casting with the family members of the other stars?

I'm pretty sure his Mom and dad were in Limbo (baseball flashback scene). I think there might have been something else in Going Home (the old film footage).. But don't quote me on that.

I don't think his brothers or sister were in anything.

Also, and I'm sure our fearless leader won't mind me speaking for him... Don't worry about asking a question in a different thread. Happens all the time, and worst that could happen is it gets bumped to another thread. We're pretty relaxed around here, and it takes quite a bit to get our goat!

Hi Doc, Thanks for the info and for before when you welcomed me aboard. And I've already been promoted from Ensign! Say Doc, I note you have neither rank nor rating, are you in JJ's doghouse/brig? Though I admit Visigoths are some of my favorite barbarians.

I always smile when characters on Magnum use Hawaiian patois. However when Jack Lord tried it it always fell flat, I enjoyed Hawaii 5-0 but the man had no (islands) soul but here I am on a tangent so I'm stopping.

I like all the episodes of MPI. All of them except for one. And I HATE this episode.

I cannot stand the two part episode "Echoes of the Mind." Honestly, it makes me want to vomit, and my mind refuses to recognize it as part of the MPI library. Oh, I hate so much about it. I could never stand Sharon Stone. I've always hated her "hey, I can play a crazy chick" acting approach she uses time and time and time and time and time again in her movies. And, man, does she paint it on heavy in this episode - starting with that terrible opening in the car where her "two selves" are going at it back in forth. Ug.

The moment I see Thomas and the gang in this episode, I wonder what new writer wrote this piece of work. The characters don't seem like themselves. I hate how instantly and completely Thomas falls for Diane. I hate how he is shown so heartbroken at the end, and at the start of the next episode he's looking at the bottom of a bottle for relief - SO NOT THOMAS MAGNUM. ARGH! And is it just me, or does episode seem to leave a rather terrible comment in the end about mental health problems (my own family has dealt with some things, and this episode so makes me cringe).

There, this post let me get it off my chest. Man, I hate "Echoes of the Mind." Again, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all the rest. But DESPISE this two part episode. And Sharon Stone has to be the most over-rated actress in the history of the biz.

Forgive me if I upset anyone who likes this episode. I never claim to always be right. But I hate this episode!

Same here, something about her I just can't stand, she thinks she is a goddess and she is not. I first saw Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct (1992) and I enjoyed the film despite Sharon Stone's arrogance and non stop snobbish character. It may have been her stage role but she does it well because that is just who she is in real life, impossible to deal with.

Echoes of the Mind part 1 I liked but part 2 faded. You probably hated it because Sharon Stone got on your nerves.

Hey Sisophous. Thanks for the reply. I was thinking while I was watching Echoes of the Mind that Michael Douglas was lucky the studio owning the Magnum rights didn't sue him for copyright infringement. Basic Instincts sure seems to have borrowed heavily from this Echoes of the Mind. I'm not totally serious, but Basic Instinct really doesn't seem so original if set up in front of this Echoes episode. You're right, I would probably be able to stomach Echoes of the Mind if Sharon Stone wasn't in it.

Now that you mention it, Basic Instinct did take a lot from Echoes of the Mind. The plots aren't identical but much of it is similar. It would be tough to win a copyright infringement case but I'd guess it would be the writer and/or director who would come under fire if a lawsuit was brought. (Director: Paul Verhoeven Writer: Joe Eszterhas)

About Sharon Stone, she could rival Elizabeth Taylor with broken marriage after broken marriage. How dumb can those guys be?

I thought she was great in Total Recall and Casino.

With Sharon Stone's looks, fame, and money, I bet the men are still lining up. I don't have an opinion either way about her, but it appears she was only married & divorced twice.
